What We Do
1.Environment and Climate Change
The Horn of Africa region is not an exception to the substantial concerns that climate change offers to nations worldwide. Somalia’s weak ecosystem makes it susceptible to extreme weather events, which has had a negative impact on the region’s environment and, livelihood of communities. Nevertheless, despite the many attempts to cushion the communities from climate change shocks there still challenges that need to be addressed to ensure climate resilience against climate change shocks, in this regard Mudan Dev will seek to work with other partners with a view of getting solutions to environment and climate change shocks that affect the community. The challenges will be addressed through tackling environment and climate related issues as follows.
Environmental challenges
Mudan dev will approach the challenges through sustainable natural resource management. Natural resources are critical for the wellbeing of the community’s livelihoods and provision of ecosystem services. Management of Land, water, wildlife, forests, minerals and Marine and Coastal Resource will be part of the activities to be carried out. By recognizing the crucial role those healthy ecosystems play, we aim to restore degraded lands, and conserve biodiversity.
Water Resource Management is crucial in order to mitigate the effects of climate change, water resources must be managed effectively and sustainably. We emphasize water stewardship, enhanced irrigation methods, and the creation of robust water infrastructure.
Community Engagement and Capacity Building will be crucial in order to involve local communities and build up their resilience, through initiatives for education, training, and awareness on how they can actively be involved in natural resource management.
Climate security
Climate security refers to the nexus of climate change and security challenges, including the hazards to human and national security caused by climate change consequences.
It acknowledges that climate change has the potential to aggravate existing conflicts, through scarcity of resources, and generate new vulnerabilities, resulting in instability and potential security issues. Mudan dev will engage the community, government officers and clan elders in finding a lasting solution to the climate security challenges.
Conflict prevention and peacebuilding: Mudan dev will seek to address the underlying causes of climate-related conflicts like competition for pasture, water, and land by encouraging discourse, developing cooperation, and improving conflict resolution processes within and between communities.
Climate Mitigation, Adaptation and Resilience
Climate adaptation refers to changes in processes, practices and structures to moderate potential damages or to benefit from opportunities associated with climate change.
Climate Change Mitigation refers to efforts to reduce or prevent emission of greenhouse gases. Mitigation can mean using new technologies and renewable energies, making older equipment more energy efficient, or changing management practices or consumer behaviour.
Mudan dev will provide support to the communities in order to adapt to changing climatic conditions through the following interventions.
- Renewable energy by adapting to green energies including solar, wind power, hydroelectric among others.
- Climate smart Agriculture activities to boost production and the same time safe guarding the environment and reducing greenhouse emission.
- Waste management to ensure proper disposal of waste and ensure any waste disposal methods employed do not in any way contribute to greenhouse gas emission.
Climate resilience is about successfully coping with and managing the impacts of climate change while preventing those impacts from growing worse. Mudan dev will endeavor to create a climate resilient society by cutting the heat-trapping emissions that drive climate change while adapting to the changes that are unavoidable—and do so in ways that make the the community be able to deal with the impact of climate change and absorb the shocks therein.
Role of Mudan dev on tackling climate security.
- Advocacy and policy influence: Mudan dev can participate in advocacy initiatives to increase awareness about the Horn of Africa region’s climate security problems, support sustainable policies, and influence decision-making processes at the local, regional, and international levels.
- Partnerships and collaboration: Effectively tackling climate security concerns requires collaboration with local communities, governments, international organizations, and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Mudan dev can form alliances in order to pool resources, share expertise, and optimize the impact of its activities.
